 A Kind of Magic (Cassie)
« Thread Started on Aug 29, 2009, 4:14am »

Strolling through the moonlit ruins, a bag containing notebooks, her wand and athame hanging across her shoulder as Molly Baker, now Baker Goldwine, made her way through Skython's abandoned city. She had a strange, semi-familiar feeling of happiness flowing through her veins. For the past few days, Molly had been living with Cassie, her friend and mentor. Cassie had been teaching her all kinds of magic, and in return Molly had begun to teach martial arts and self-defence, as well as helping her with fire spells. Elemental spells were tricky, but quite simple once you got the hang of them.

Skipping over broken stones, light as the air and graceful as a swan, Molly wandered through broken down buildings, weaving in and out. She had never seen a place like this before. It must have been huge, almost as big as Skython was now, and had somehow fallen so greatly. The city had so many mysteries, it was astounding.

Coming to a large dead end, the four crumbling walls still stretching high, Molly placed her bag on the ground and took out her wand. She began to practice her magic, waiting for Cassie to arrive for their training session.

The night was perfect for magic. It was floating in the air like perfume, the power only a few could notice. This past week had been one of the best for Cassandra. She could hardly remember a time when studying was such fun. And she had her friend to thank for that, as well as for developing some new skills.

She walked towards her, deep into the familiar ruins that were once a great city. The girl had abandoned her frilly dresses and bows and dressed in a pair of old jeans and a blue T-shirt that had burn marks from their previous training. Instead of her usual back she had a backpack, stuffed with all the things they could possibly need.

When she reached a certain part of the old city, she closed her eyes and let the wind speak to her. A heartbeat later she smiled. Cassie knew where Molly was and rushed to that spot.

"Ah, I see you beat me to it," she noticed with a grin. "I'm sorry for the delay, I had to pick up some new candles... I hope everything's going alright." She took out her wand and turned back to her friend. "Should we start?"

Molly smiled when she sensed Cassie's approach. There was no hiding for either of them. She turned at the sound of her friend's voice, twirling her ebony wand expertly between her fingers, the crystal glimmering in the moonlight.
"Glad you made it, I was just practicing some basic hex magic a little before you got here," she said, pointing to the large burn marks and chipped stone surfaces on the wall behind her, smiling wryly.

"Sure, let's start. What would you like to begin with? Shields, elementals? Pick anything!" Molly suggested, throwing her wand up and catching it in her hand as it came back down, grinning widely. She was wearing a pair of loose, faded jeans and a black tank top, her long dark hair tied up up in a ponytail.

Standing with her back to the singed and beaten walls, Molly raised her wand and took a defensive stance,
"Take your best shot and I'll try and deflect it," she said, eyes sparkling with excitement. Training with Cassie was the most fun she had in years. Since she her childhood, Molly had had to rely on herself for training, and now she could teach and learn from someone she had truly connected with.

An answering smile appeared in an instant both on Cassie's face and in her eyes. She saw the results of her friend's magic and chuckled softly. This place was a good place to practice precisely because it was so damaged anything extra wouldn't stand out. Hexes were simple, something both of them could do without much trouble, but training implied working on everything.

"Shields, we haven't covered those enough," Cassie answered and smiled at Molly's skill with the wand. Instead of imitating her moves, she pointed her own wand forward in one swift movement, letting it glide gracefully through the air. Both girls got in their positions and Cassandra raised her wand arm more, shifting her weight to the foot on the same side and holding her free hand a little away from her body.

"Alright." She mustered up her energy and shot a lightning bold straight towards Molly, saying the words mentally so her friend wouldn't be warned. "That should be a good start," she noted, grinning slightly, just as thrilled as the other. Training with another meant you could not only find your limits and overcome them, but helped you stay on your toes. Doing it with a friend meant there was so much fun involved it hardly seemed like work. "So," the girl asked, staying slightly crouched as she waited for Molly's answering spell, "seen the city yet?"

The lightning bolt was easily deflected by a simple shield that spun like silver cobwebs from the end of Molly's wand, forming a screen in front of her. It distorted her view of Cassie, as though she were looking through molded glass. The bolt bounced off the shield and traveled upward, disappearing into the sky. Lowering her wand, the shield dissolved into the air, leaving only the faint, lingering smell of magic left.
"Defensive spells always seem to smell like burnt toast," Molly commented, wrinkling her nose.

Gathering up her energy, Molly transformed parts of the air into sharp icicles, using the water in the atmosphere. One after the other she sent in quick succession toward her friend, knowing she could not hurt a witch with Cassie's skill unless she really tried.
"Not yet, but I've been planning to go in soon. Maybe I'll meet up with that cutie of a roommate you keep telling me about," Molly teased, remaining in her stance as she waited for Cassie's answering spell. She had seen a photo of Bailey Jensen, the elusive roommate in Cassie's room once, and definitely couldn't wait to meet him.

The shield had a nice consistency and obviously did the job it was created for. She wondered what normal people would think if they saw lightning going up rather than down. Lucky Molly chose the best place for practice. Cassie laughed at her friend's comment and expression, letting the feeling of magic fade away. It was her turn now and she kept her relaxed appearance, although her grip on the wand increased slightly.

A swish and a semi-transparent calotte separated the two witches, curved so it was protecting Cassandra. It glowed with a red tint when the ice arrows hit, making them melt and turn into a puff of steam. Quickly, Cassie let the shield disappear and prepared for a risky one: a stream of fire. Of course, considering her ability with fire as well as the attention drop when Molly said her best friend was cute almost failed the spell completely. Instead of the river of flame Cassie had imagined, only a few spheres the size of tennis balls reached Molly.

She was even more surprised when she realised that, at first, she was talking about the other guy she was mentoring. But Molly never met either and only saw Bailey in a photo. Shaking her head and sighing at her spell, she regained her defensive position. "Maybe, who knows? You two should get along." After all, they were the only ones she considered her true friends. But there was no way they wouldn't. "Speaking of cute, mom keeps bugging me to go out more. Even if I moved out she keeps pushing me to date." She rolled her eyes and made an exasperated face. It was so fun to have girl time. One hundred percent different compared to her normal self, but oh, so fun. "Maybe you'll end up dating him and I can use that to get rid of her," she grinned.

Easily deflecting the fire-balls, Molly giggled at the expression on Cassie's face when she spoke of her pushy mother. She squashed a snort that threatened to bubble up, the remnant of a habit she thought she had kicked years ago. The subject bought back memories of her own mother.

"Mine was like that. Can you believe she tried to have me engaged to one of my distant cousins when I was only eleven?" Molly shuddered at the memory. Edmund had been a skinny, pale boy with no aptitude for magic at all. He had a stutter which mucked up his spell work and was allergic to nearly every potion ingredient known to their kind. Truly pathetic for a warlock, especially a Baker.

"Mm, maybe I will. Little darlin' like him would be shame to pass up," Molly smiled conspiratorially, flicking her wand and sending a great stream of blazing fire toward her friend. What Cassie probably wasn't expecting was for it to be cold fire, harmless in essence but good for effect. Magic was so flexible, so malleable; that's what made being a witch the most fun.
